This GM8.0 example explains how to make a character fire a bullet towards the nearest enemy. It's a platform-game and the system works with GML-code.

Firing forward
Firing forward The system automatically selects the closest enemy and fires towards it.
Shooting the other way
Shooting the other way You can fire both ways, left and right. You fire in the direction you're looking at, never backwards, even if the closest enemy is behind you.
